Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
