The buzz surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
